History

Southern New Mexico is packed with historical and archeological sites. Native Americans mapped this landscape for subsistence, trade and community welfare; pioneers settled and mined, farmed and ranched. There are military forts and battlefields, railroads, missile ranges and cultures that clashed and joined together; all these contribute to our rich Southwestern heritage.

Wildlife

Early morning: Deer, Elk and Mustangs make their way into meadows to graze as birds call and answer bringing the morning to life. Bald Eagles perch in snags by lakes and ponds while watching for fish and small mammals. Toward evening, Black Bears, Mountain Lions, Bobcats, Coyotes, Fox, Ringtails and Raccoons begin to make their rounds. (For wildlife viewing, plan on at least before sunrise travel, or ask about extended tour options)

Environments

From the snow melt on the tops of the Sierras and Sacramento mountains and the summer monsoon rains, water is quickly absorbed into the land of this dry climate from timberline and pine forests to pinion-juniper grasslands and white sands desert. Within an hour from Ruidoso, we can enjoy any of five distinct ecosystems with panoramic scenery, seasonal wild flowers and many varieties of cactus and other fascinating plants.
